LULLABY OF WAVES
The film unfolds as a poignant exploration of the filmmakers' journey toward understanding and accepting the profound sense of belonging tied to space and time. Delving into the search for identity through the mother's voice and her profound connection to the river, the narrative unfolds the events that have shaped and will continue to shape the future.
A 53-year-old woman with 26 years of marriage and 25 years of motherhood reflects on her life. The focus is on the mother who, in pursuit of employment, journeyed to the place of her child's birth, crossing the formidable river Brahmaputra. Her life took an unexpected turn in the remote land of Sadiya, a region divided and detached from the rest of Assam. The only access to this area is by crossing the Brahmaputra, marking the beginning of Assam and a tip that was never connected to the mainland.
The detachment from the mainland created a profound difference in the mindset of the locals, where anyone from the other side, even fellow Assamese, was perceived as an outsider. Hailing from the labeled "Hiporiya" on the other side, the mother faced numerous obstacles in her quest for employment, with threats to her home and land. Despite the challenges, she embraced a different fate.
The river played a significant role in shaping her life, and despite the bitter-sweet experiences, there remains a sense of gratitude. The filmmaker, as a son and an individual forced to leave his mother when she wanted him to stay, acknowledges the river's influence on his life. The documentary chronicles the mother's relationship with the town, exploring the ways it impacted both mother and son. The constant search for validation and a place to call home becomes the filmmaker's inner struggle, grappling with the judgments of others who label them as "Hiporiya." Yet, he questions, isn't this the very place where he was born, challenging notions of belonging and identity.

Ayon Pratim Saikia is a filmmaking student currently pursuing a master’s in design from NID Ahmedabad. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Tezpur Central University, Assam. He belongs to a place called Sadiya, on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He is deeply connected and dependent on his roots; the rivers and the land has been his motivator and inspiration. It is important for him as a person sailing out to achieve dreams far away from his home. His works share this element and give him his identity. After picking up painting brushes at a young age he was fascinated with art. Later on his journey, he tried to observe this through his camera. His vision is to create with empathy and kindness and wishes to understand things beyond as he grows.
“My journey with this vision starts with my place of birth where disasters created life in their own charm. I keep an eye on the essence of time and am fascinated by its game of events.”
