Director Biography - Paula Rial Lorente

Paula Rial Lorente was born in Madrid, Spain. She spent most of her childhood watching films and advertisement festivals. Her passion for film started when I was 7 years old. Paula used to have a lot of curiosity about the advertisement, wondering how would she create one. So her father started showing her advertisement festivals, where the filmmakers explained how and why they made them and she started developing her curiosity in film.

At 8 she made her first script, a few years later Paula started producing her own short films with friends. She went to the Audiovisual and Cinematography School of Madrid (ECAM) and the Film Institute of Madrid, then studied A-Levels in Arts, always trying to go step forward to know more.

In 2019 Paula made a decision that would change her life completely; move to London and follow her dreams studying film at Middlesex University (where she is learning and getting more contact in the film industry).

Director Statement

This idea was born one morning with my partner Andres Ortiz. We started talking about making a thriller short film in which we could use this huge house we already knew. That morning I was listening to some music with my old walkman and I thought it could be a great idea to use it in the film, and since that moment we had the title of the film, "Walkman".

When I started doing de character development of Emma and Clara, I realized they were made to be played by Carlota del Olmo and Alba Toledo. When I offered it to them they really liked the script and told me that they loved to act in these kinds of roles, really emotional complex. I also really liked working with my male actor, Carlos E. Ruiz, who played perfectly Mr. Alfredo and gave him a special essence.

Having this house as a location was a great tool we had to squeeze the most. I enjoyed playing with the lines (which are a very strong part of the house) and with the colours.

I really liked working with my crew and how everything became so good into this incredible project.
