Director Statement

“Walking Forward” was conceived as a non-fiction web series, to document the impact of a global pandemic on the arts & cultural sectors as well as hearing stories of hope from healthcare professionals and others whose lives were upended by Covid-19. From the word go, “Walking Forward” was about finding inspiration and everything we need to make it through the last two years.
All in all 10 episodes were made and released in two batches in December 2020 and June 2021, right in the thick of the pandemic. Remember Delta?
Aside from capturing these very real conversations with people from all walks of life, I got to keep on doing what I love which is making movies. That in itself is a great privilege and I am grateful.
Even though Covid appears to have disappeared from everyday life in Namibia, one final “Walking Forward” episode had to be made. The eleventh episode: “Walking Forward: So long, my friend.”
We are allowed to travel again and in the series finale, we venture into the ancient Namib Desert where our creative entrepreneur Ndinomholo will do what he loves, exhibit his art for one, and find out how a tourism establishment navigated through the times of travel restrictions.
I wanted to round off the journey that has been “Walking Forward” by revisiting some of the pearls of wisdom captured since the first episode. Beyond looking back, the finale has another perspective on offer, the where to from here. Well, we don’t really know, do we? And that in itself is a good thing, because if anything has stuck since March 2020, it most certainly is that things can change so rapidly, it’s best to just stay flexible.
