Director Statement

We were drawn to this story when we learned that our groupmate, Merilyn, was a former athlete. She shared about her time at Singapore Sports School, and we were fascinated by the lives of student athletes. They lead vastly different lives from us despite being in the similar age range. In an education system that prioritises academic results above everything else, quitting school or neglecting studies to focus on sport are incredibly courageous decisions. In particular, our featured profiles are contrarians as they dare to dream of making it to the pinnacle of sport – the Olympics – despite the many challenges they face. Primarily, the need to juggle sports and school. As if these challenges were not enough, the Olympics being postponed due to the pandemic added another hurdle. In this period of stasis and uncertainty, we wanted to provide a window into the lives of Singaporean athletes. We wanted to explore how the athletes were coping and training during this time. More importantly, we wanted to tell stories of their dreams and the sacrifices they’ve made for a glimmer of hope at Olympic glory.
