Director Biography - Chimaobim Nathan

Graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2012 with the Kubrick Prize for Fiction for his final year film. After which I went on to refine my skill and develop my voice as a writer/director. After a couple of years away from the scene I wrote a small comedy short, YOU'RE ANNOYING in 2020 to ease back into directing which was later acquired by BBC3 for their Festival of Funny programme and iPlayer platform in 2021. The acquisition fee made it possible to shoot my next two shorts A PROMISE MADE and WHENEVER YOU'RE READY in 2022.

Director Statement

I knew I wanted to tell a story around a largely ignored topic related to men and my initial topic of choice was domestic violence against men. However during my research I came across the statistic of male sexual assault victims which was higher than I would thought it was. This fact triggered a memory of a rumour when I was in secondary school of an infamous boy who would orally rape on the guys he robbed at knife and the story of Reynhard Sinaga - the convicted male rapist in Manchester.

I wanted to tell a story that touches on a difficult issue to spark social conversation, but above the social impact of the film, I wanted to tell a film about healing from, and tackling past trauma. And to express the freedom and healing that comes from being vulnerable and talking about difficult issues and trauma.
