Director Statement

Umiharu Produções Culturais e Cinematográficas was founded 10 years ago, with the vocation to create and carry out humanist socio-cultural and cinematographic projects, which go beyond entertainment, adding values to people and contributing to a better society.

Achievements through art can inspire reflection and the desire for action. Along this time, important contents emerged, such as sustainability, the cultural identity of the Brazilian people, gender equality and health education.

And from the beginning, the protection and defense of the dignity of children and adolescents has been a priority. There were some Cultural Projects offered with this content: Itinerant Theater Show around the Brazil, Radio Program “Na Mão Certa” with over 65 thousand copies distributed, and finally: World Without Bondaries - A warning against the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents! A legacy to the Braziliand and World’s childhood and youth, which I and the whole team embraced with generosity, dedicating ourselves with great affection.

The original Project approved by the Incentive Law, provided for a 15-minute film, but we made a 27-minute short film, as the subject required greater depth and contours.

Sexual exploitation is a multi-causal issue and that is why we seek out several interlocutors and challenge ourselves to find suitable deponents. And what a wealth of experiences they were able to add to the Film!

However, we needed to go further and present a broader approach that did not just expose the problem, but that presented ways for its prevention. This is how the Documentary that addresses the issue of facing this issue on Brazilian roads was established, and points to future prospects for a more inclusive and fair society.

It was a great challenge!

To approach sexual exploitation without exposing people, neither those who have suffered the aggression nor the aggressors, always starting from the general assumption of human respect.

We directly heard the testimonies of many women who lived this problem, and who generously shared their memories with us. We talked to protection associations, social workers and other agents. And we received Childhood Brasil's Technical Consultancy, also based on research carried out in partnership with the Federal Universities of Rio Grande do Sul and Sergipe.

But, as a Film Director, I wanted more. I needed a story that represented so many others that we had contact with. And then apperar our Dear Thaís, with her courage and great compassion to share her human transformation’s drama with everyone, serving as encouragement to many other people. And to complete the concept, I created the fictional image of the gatekeeper, also paying tribute to the great Brazilian writer and poet Guimarães Rosa. A poetic metaphor that presents an ideal world where children in their ethnic, social and cultural diversity, can live free from oppression, play and have fun together, like true brothers and sisters from the same human family.

World Without Boundaries - a warning against the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, aims to awaken people, companies, organizations, entities, governments, the whole society in order to act in favor of this cause. Each of us can and must contribute! We all have the responsibility for the lives of the children and teenagers of the world!

Thank you.
