WOMANHOOD IN LOCKDOWN
“Whomanhood in lockdown” is a documentary realized with videos shot by women of diverse social backgrounds and ages with their own mobile phones during the health tsunami caused by Covid-19. “Tutte a Casa” shows how balancing inspiration, creativity and despair, women have been able to work on their inner selves going further than restlessness and cheering from rooftops and balconies. Caught between not-so-smart work and taking care of
families, women looked for solutions to constraint. “Tutte a Casa” investigates the reactions of women souls: what drives our reaction during a crisis and how are we reborn, sometimes stronger, sometimes more fragile, or just simply different.

We are a group of sixteen professionals working in cinema and communication. We met on a Facebook group dedicated to cinema at the beginning of the pandemicand we decided to join forces, seized by the urgency to document the moment of crisis that was taking place. This is how is born the collective “Tutte a Casa” and immediately thereafter our association. We established some principles, fundamental for our working together: participation, horizontality and kindness. Our professional challenge was to continue telling stories despite the crisis. We started organizing, producing and directing a film remotely, operating as an all-female online production house. On 17 March 2020 we launched the firstcall inviting women to send video diaries telling their lives dirung thisemergency. By the end of the lockdown, our project attracted great interest from the press and television. In only a matter of weeks it has managed to attract a community of over 2,000 followers and collected more than 4,000 videos. We have now entered phase 2 of our film and are looking for finance and distribution.
Why this film now?
The public narration of the pandemic is based on words such as war and battle. It re-proposes the model of the solid and coherent hero: yet, this is far from the reality that we all have at hand. In fact, the methods of reaction to the crises vary according to who we are, our previous experiences and according to our emotional and psychological state. It is therefore important to listen to women, thereby changing the approach and to question the dominant point of view which is mainly from a man’s perspective. Re-proposing the same patterns is harmful to everyone, men and women alike. We want to change and we want to dwell on the nuances, conceiving a poetic investigative work that goes beyond the limits of today and the urgency of Covid-19.
Womanhood in Lockdown is a participative documentary film created by videos shot with cell phones by the film characters themselves: heterogenous women create contrasts, assonance and cross-references. Intimate reflections, observations of everyday life and daring subjectives shots are combined in the film. A mosaic of lives and faces where a syncopated editing holds together the broken pieces of the historical crisis and opens towards discontinuity and simultaneity reflecting the online communication mode. The collective Tutte a Casa, immerged in the film characters, witnesses how digital convergence and technological inserts (facebook and watsapp text messages, sequences in full screen, slow internet connection, unexpected stops, video chats, etc.) can become a creative and partecipative tool for the documentary story telling.
