Voyage à la Mer
Filmed all over Japan in October 2010 and 2022, the moving images captured here are the visual support for Canadian musician, author, producer, and composer Alex Henry Foster's latest albums Kimiyo and A Measure of Shape and Sounds. Formerly the frontman for Juno Awards nominee Your Favorite Enemies, Foster released his first solo album Windows in the Sky in 2018. NME described it as a "dreamy blast of post-rock." He toured heavily in Europe and played festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival. Earning critical acclaim and fans in the process.
After one tour and in-between records, Foster had to undergo heart surgery and found himself "completely out of sync." After the long recovery, he contacted Montreal-based artist Ben Lemelin and traveled back to Japan with artist Momoka to craft a visual album and accompanying records. He writes “The motion picture was highly significant for me. From the get-go, I knew I wanted those images to carry their own narratives, to tell their own stories, to communicate their own emotions. I definitely thought the different paintings it visually offers were rich enough." A firm believer in transformative movement, Foster intertwines black and white with moments in color. He features images of fans and friends who joined him in a funeral back in 2010, and stunning visuals of Japan then and now.

Alex Henry Foster is a Canadian musician, author, producer, and composer, formerly the frontman for Juno Awards nominee Your Favorite Enemies. Alex Henry Foster released his first solo album Windows in the Sky in 2018. The album is a “dreamy blast of post-rock” (NME) that “brings to mind artists like Hammock and Asche & Spencer with heaping helpings of Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky”. His second album consists of a live reinterpretation of his solo material, recorded at a sold-out performance at the 40th Festival de Jazz de Montreal. Ben Lemelin is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and music producer. He and Foster have partnered on many projects together. Lemelin is part of The Long Shadows, Foster’s band, and was bass player in Your Favorite Enemies. Alex's latest offering is the multi-LP and video project Voyage A La Mer. The first LP Kimiyo was released on April 26 followed by the instrumental LP A Measure of Shape and Sounds on September 20.
"My perspective was to a create a timeless reflection made of past and present human sensations."
