Director Biography - Sofie Khan

Sofie Khan grew up in inner-city Chicago, raised by a Mexican mamá and a Pakistani pops. She also spent part of her childhood in Brownsville, Texas—a bordertown that gave her a bit of a southern twang and plenty of wild experiences. After some time in Texas, her family returned to Chicago, where Sofie immersed herself in the arts—dance, music, theater, and writing—to navigate life in the city.

Being bicultural, Sofie and her sisters often played with their Mexican and Pakistani identities, which eventually led her to sketch comedy and training at Second City Conservatory along other acting schools in Chicago and LA. Sofie is proud to have been part of Teatro Luna, where she created and performed the first version of Mexistani. She has also worked with Salsation! Latinx Sketch Comedy Troupe, Steppenwolf’s Sketchbook Comedy Festival, Rasaka South Asian Theater Company, CASA 0101, and LA's Funny Women Festival.

Recently, Sofie has been virtually performing excerpts from her one-woman show Mexistani: Growing Up Mexican and Pakistani in America since its sold-out, award-winning premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Her short film Ground Nuts was an official selection at the Lakeview and Underground Cinema International Film Festivals, winning Best Comedy and earning nominations for Best Actress at the Couch Film Festival and Toronto's Alternative Film Festival.

Sofie has been grateful to be an alum of the MPAC Screenwriting Lab, Warner Bros Discovery Access and CBS Pipeline program as a writer. She is developing her next film, Mariachi Saree, merging traditions across identities with modern storytelling with a focus on personal growth.

Director Statement

I wanted to capture the powerful voices that rise from the margins, the heartbeat of everyday people fighting for a better tomorrow. Through poetic imagery and a raw, emotional narrative, my aim is to remind viewers that every vote counts. With each ballot cast, we shape not just policy, but the legacy we leave behind for future generations.
