Seungsook Park was born on April 6th, 1968, in Seoul, South Korea, to a family where an artistic gene runs through, consisting of creative members who were all either painters or visual designers. It wasn’t until 1984 when she saw the movie “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes”, directed by Hugh Hudson that she stopped pursuing her childhood dream of being a scientist. She was turning only 17 when the movie had a great impact and gave her a desire to be an artist.
She lost interest in Science being motivated by her enthusiasm for Art. She went to a college in Korea and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art Criticism and Curating. Still feeling the thirst for more knowledge on art, she flew to America. She studied psychology to be an art therapist. Having another master’s degree in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago helped her build up concrete knowledge on her field. One of her greatest works was that she made a great contribution to open the gate to Korea for Art Therapy. She has gained a lot of experience over 20 years in teaching, supervising, consulting, publishing books and planning social contribution programs.
After working her way up to a pioneer in the field of art therapy in Korea, she realized that there was another compelling desire inside her to create stories. In order to turn that urge into reality, she stepped down from her job and jumped into film-making. She joined the small crew making short films where they study movies, discuss scenarios and share their own ideas with one another.
Recently, she made into a movie, Visitor, one of the so many messages that she would like to deliver to the world. She conveys through the movie her thoughts on the wonders and mysteries of life she has experienced personally and also witnessed in other people’s lives as a therapist.
Life is full of mysteries where an unexpected person can turn out to mean a lot to you and the vice versa. You never know who you are going to meet and what kind of impact that person is going to make on your life. After all, one is going to learn to find hopes only in people.
