5th VideoRez - Videoessay Festival & Contest
VideoRez #5 (2024) is a festival & contest dedicated to a special audiovisual form – video essay. The festival is part of the youth film platform Mad About Film (produced by Institute Vizo).
VideoRez #5 festival will take place in Kulturni dom Nova Gorica (Nova Gorica, Slovenia) for the first time, from 29-31 May 2024. First four years we were running only the contest. This year at VideoRez #5 young video essayists will see video essays from all around the world and other films dedicated to yung audiences.
On 31 May 2024 we will give awards to best video essays in 2024.

A contest competition for the best video essay in 2 categories:
- high school students (15-19 yrs)
- unversity/ college students (19-24 yrs; and older BA students with a student status)
Contest is a competition for young film enthusiasts who use film and audio-visual (AV) communication to reflect on the world. VideoRez invites you to look at the world through film and video eyes, to focus on the topics that interest you most about society, culture, youth, media, politics and film itself. VideoRez encourages new thinking, which sees in films, TV, radio, advertisements, series, music videos, journalistic contributions and more, new horizons of perceiving the world, and above all, a new hybrid way of expression. In doing so, we use so called a collage montage film approach.

The video essay is a film form with a long tradition, but it is not yet recognized in our country (Slovenia) and also in many other countries. Creators do not need to record anything, but instead edit existing AV recordings (excerpts from films, TV shows, commercials, videos, etc.) into a montage sequence that communicates the author's thought. The form makes use of the power of montage, which enables recordings to become video or movie.
Considering that the creators use materials of other authors, it is necessary to have regulated copyrights. This is possible in several ways, namely to use:
- recordings from personal archives
- open-source archives
- use other material (short excerpts from films, TV shows, videos, commercials) and at the end respectfully mention the authors of the works and the source where you got the material
- you list all used material at the end of the video under References
- mention in the video: "The film was not made for commercial purposes, but for research purposes."

The jury reserves the right not to award any prize or to award additional special mentions.
* If the winning video essay was created by a minor, we agree on the payment of the prize with his or her parent or adult guardian.
** The payment of the prize is adjusted to the costs of the organizer. They can reach a maximum of 150 or. 200 € and are paid to only one person (in the case of working in pairs – to the one listed first).
