Venus Rising

The film depicts the different poses of Aphrodite, shown through the movements of Burlesque dance, interspersed with those of a woman grieving in a hospital. The juxtaposition of these disparate images illustrate the contrasts and connections between these two themes.

Director Statement

The idea for this abstract film was inspired by a personal experience of miscarriage and grief. It was also informed by a work of American writer Thomas Moore that explored the different poses in which Aphrodite has been depicted throughout history. Building upon the idea that each of these poses are associated with a perspective or lens with which to view and navigate life, this film explores the notion that these perspectives, when meditated upon, can restore a sense of vitality and openness after experiencing loss.
