Director Statement

I took part in an experimental project called Auditory Driving. Auditory Driving is a group Acupuncture session that incorporates some sort of powerful musical component. This particular Auditory Driving session was a collaboration between sound artist David First and Acupuncturist / Musician Kate Henderson. David First played a drone through giant speakers that he created, that matched the frequencies of the Earth’s rotation while Kate Henderson first gave basic acupuncture to everyone in the room and then performed live Shamanic drumming. The effects for me were extremely visual and was the inspiration for my film Variations On Us.

I am forever fascinated by the themes of non linear time and parallel universes. The idea that each moment of our lives plays out over and over infinitely on multiple dimensions. I believe that our memories reflect this with paramount moments in our lives that we reflect on. We think back, how did that moment happen? How did it go down? We create so many versions in our mind. This film is a meditation on just that. It takes place in a person’s mind, where the setting is stripped away to just black space. The focus is on the 4 pinnacle moments in this relationship and all of the variations oh how we see ourselves. The choice for Super 8 MM shot on a black backdrop I believe perfectly captures the feeling of these fuzzy memories that one is searching in their minds. I hope you enjoy and connect to this.
