Valentina's voices. In the light, abortion stories
More than 95% of the legal pregnancy terminations made in Colombia are requested under the health exception.
Valentina's story is a way to put a face to hundreds of anonymous stories behind abortion. We seek to counteract the silence around this common experience in people's lives and shed light on the different factors and nuances of the decision to have an abortion.
In Colombia abortion is allowed if:
1. Pregnancy carries a risk to the health or life of the pregnant person.
2. Pregnancy is the product of sexual violence, incest or non-consensual fertilization.
3. The existence of life-threatening fetal malformations
However, every year around 400,000 abortions are performed outside the health system, representing a major problem of public health, social justice and gender equality.
With the launch of "In the light, abortion stories", in partnership with Casa E Social, just like Valentina, 7 other women and men accepted the challenge of contributing to the reduction of stigma related to the voluntary termination of pregnancy, which constitutes one of the great barriers to access legal and safe health services.
