Director Biography - Waitiare Kaltenegger Icka, Marcelo Varas

Waitiare Kaltenegger was born in Austria. Her first language is, in fact, an Austrian dialect; the second, Portuguese, and the third, Spanish. Their parents met on the island, but after getting married they went to live in Europe. For the work trips of his dad - electrical engineer, employed in a German company -, during her childhood she lived in different countries: Austria, China, Brazil, Colombia. When Waitiare turned 8 years old and her family settled on the island, they left with a residential, which is now a hotel.
She remembers that in her school they always stressed the importance of the rescue of the Rapanui culture: language, dances, stories. Part of this explains his taste for developing artistic skills (such as guitar, ukulele) and sports (such as surfing).
When She graduated, She acknowledges that at first he wanted to study Archeology, to learn about the island's past, but when he learned that there was a film career, she changed her mind.
-I felt it was the place from which I could influence the young ones more. This would be my means to contribute to culture, "he says.
I knew about the impact of communications. While studying, She transformed himself: he conducted a local television program in which he interviewed different talents of the island. Not everything has been easy for him: he recognizes that in the field in which he has decided to develop his career, he has not had any references -not men or women- on the island.
-I'm the first one who is making fiction. There are those who have made documentaries, but I am like the new door. There are many of my generation who are doing things too, but in other areas such as dance, language, singing. The next generation walks in another. She has another goal in her life. In my generation, the parents were on top of you, repeating that you had to learn things from the island. But that does not happen in theirs. That's why I want today to be able to motivate you, to convey to you that it is something important. The cinema is the best way to reach a mass audience and especially the younger ones, he says.
Waitiare Kaltenegger says that this year she went to Austria, to visit his grandmother and her cousins. She does not rule out later undertaking something in that other country.
-But today I have that hunger to do these things on the island.
