What happens when the sun falls?
Night has been one of those invisible borders throughout history. For many it represents the opposite of the day, for others its continuity, for others the origin of the whole. It is undoubtedly a moment full of controversy, imagination, the unknown, but also opportunities, work and needs.

When we think about the night and the city, it’s almost impossible not to imagine the neons and exterior panels of Las Vegas or Hong Kong or any other urban center. Electric light revolutionized the night space, expelling the darkness of the streets and with it many characters of the night. The illuminated city has improved the “after hours” circulation of people, cars and goods, reducing risks and accidents, but at the same time creating new shadows, and places for those who should not be seen during the day.

The 24-hour city does not sleep, it is a constant activity, a continuous flow of services and people. Health professionals, such as doctors and nurses, are on watch to take care of a world exposed to constant accidents, illness and emergencies; firefighters and police are always on guard to help in case of unforeseen events … there are many nighttime heroes.

There are many professions that are developed during bedtime, such as garbage collectors, hotel receptionists, hauliers, bakers … there are many who live upside down so that we can have our streets clean, our bills ready, the our mail in the mailbox or our bread for breakfast. But like these professions, there are others who work in the shadows created between lampposts, some well-liked, such as food delivery people for the homeless; others, stigmatized, such as sex workers. Night is still the other side of a society of contrasts.

Night is likewise the realm of brown cats, those who seek anonymity to live their fantasies, or to commit atrocious crimes. The night is a disconnected moment that harnesses the dream of many to create action, entertainment or escape scenarios, while singing in a karaoke, wearing platform shoes and make-up, or frozen with the emptiness sound of a shot.

We must not forget all those who play with others’ suffering, addictions, helplessness, and pain. The night seems to cover and unmask at the same time those who live on the margins of our society. The Grimm brothers’ monsters continue today, but with other faces.

On the other hand, the night is also a festive moment of encounter and socialization. Whether it’s a bar, nightclub, party or art festival, people take to the streets to meet in a different environment, build memories, meet new people or even love.

The night is a space of possibilities, of silence and forgetfulness. What happens at night does not have to continue after dawn. We talk about moments of continuity and discontinuity in the contemporary city, and your portraits are especially welcome.

We invite the submission of works that approach the night in any of its multiple faces, that portrays what happens when we sleep, that gives voice to those we do not see when we live at another time, … works that put the night in the center of our eyes.

The Urban Audio-visual Festival – UAF emerges as a place for discussion and dialogue between professionals who work on urban life. This scientific meeting aims to promote the production of quality and the dissemination of the audio-visual work carried out by researchers and filmmakers in the field of urban studies, as well as other related disciplines. The UAF is a cultural project developed by (des)Calçada Association with the academic and scientific support of CIES-IUL, CICS-NOVA and IS-UP.

The UAF commits itself to the community, bringing these works closer to the general public, approaching the academy to all. The reflection on what happens in our cities is one of the bases that gave rise to this festival, as well as the need to listen to a plurality of voices, understandings and experiences from those who experience first-hand the topics proposed annually.

Life in society presents an infinity of situations, hence the need to narrow down the different topics and annually focus our eyes on a single concept. The UAF in its role of promoting dialogue with the community, as well as promoting reflection, manifests its sensitivity to the present day, accommodating issues of general interest in each edition.

Scientific audio-visual production, not very considered by many disciplines, finds in the UAF a privileged scenario, both for the presentation of works and for the evaluation of the audio-visual methods applied to the study of the urban. Likewise, the UAF invites its screens to unconventional productions, made with mobile devices or exploring other forms of production of moving images. The use of new techniques is another of the main objectives of the UAF, as it aims to make known the innovations made and their multiple applications to the study of contemporary cities.

The UAF is an invitation to watch the cities. To join to a debate far beyond the screens.

UAF – Urban Audiovisual Festival, has an annual occurrence, on dates set year after year. UAF is a project carried out by the Descalçada Association and has the support of the CIES-IUL (Centro de Investigações e Estudos de Sociologia, Instituto Universitario de Lisboa), the Sociology Institute of the University of Porto and the CICS.Nova, FSCH Nova University.

1. FESTIVAL ENTRIES
Multiple entries are welcome.

Each entry must be submitted independently thru FreeFilmWay platform.

2. CATEGORIES AND FORMATS
UAF features 7 (seven) categories:

Documentary
Ethnographic Film
Music-video
MobileFilms: films made using cell-phones or tablets
Experimental: audiovisual projects that evidence a new approach to visual methods
Fiction films
Animated films

3. YEAR OF PRODUCTION
All festival entries for this edition must have been produced after January 1, 2015.

4. LANGUAGE VERSIONS
The primary language of the festival is English, but there is not any restriction on this regard as far as the film includes subtitles in English.

In this edition, we will host a special session for Portuguese films. Films in Portuguese are very welcome but they will have to follow the extra requirements cited below, as the other films.

Special requirements for every submission:

English subtitles;
Synopsis wrote in English. Full scripts are not need;
The movie must have the subtitles inserted.
Submitted films without these requirements, risk to be excluded.

5. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS
The films that wish to participate in the UAF have two stages :

Stage 1: Screening by UAF Crew and Scientific Committee. 

Stage 2:  Film registration (after confirmation of acceptance) until February 5th 2020.

Video codec: H.264
Audio codec: AAC
No copy protection + no loop
Delete any region and security codes.
7. Scientific Committee
The international scientific committee is composed of professionals and well-known academics, in the area of Visual Sciences, Communication Sciences, and Social Sciences.

8. RIGHTS OF USE
By entering an entry in the festival, the entrant declares that is entitled to dispose of all rights to the use of the entry. Authors will be requested to fill two forms before being fully accepted on the festival.

These documents must be submitted with an ID copy of the rights holder: passport or ID card*

*only for European citizens.

9. ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION
Accepted videos will be notified on January 30th, 2020.

The presence of the director/producer during the sessions is strongly desired.

The decisions of the scientific committee are not contestable.

Decisions of the scientific committee and the festival Organization are final and not subject to any legal appeal.

10. LIABILITY OF THE FESTIVAL
UAF Organization reserves the right to reclassify festival entries into other categories where this is deemed appropriate. The festival does not accept any responsibility for festival entries which are classified in the wrong category or arrive at the festival office subsequent to the deadline specified. The festival’s liability is confined to intent or grossly negligent conduct, which applies specifically in the event of loss or damage of an entry. The festival organization does not accept any responsibility for the cancellation of the festival due to force majeure.

11. MISCELLANEOUS
UAF Organization reserves the right to compile entries on a “UAF REEL” or similar, also in processed form, and to distribute same on a medium deemed appropriate by the festival. This also applies to stills/images provided to the festival.

The entrants transfer all rights appropriate in this context upon entrance of the festival entry to the festival. The festival reserves the right to use all recordings taken at the festival for any promotional purpose in any medium deemed appropriate by the festival. The festival reserves the right to exclude entries from the call.

By entering a festival entry the entrant accepts all Rules and Regulations and also agrees to hold the festival harmless against all costs or claims of third parties arising from any such use by the festival or from false information by the entrant. Exclusive place of jurisdiction is Lisbon, Portugal. The festival will not sell or rent personal data provided by you.
