Uproot
Ami stands in front of her mothers grave and recounts her mother’s cries, desperate struggle, and physical abuse at the hands of her father. Uproot is a short animated art film that recounts a mother’s mortality and encourages survivors of tragedies to find the closure and courage to move forward.

Kalilinoe Detwiler is the creator and animator for the film Uproot. She is a senior at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the Academy of Creative Media with a focus in Animation. She is also studying English with a minor in music. She is highly invested in combining different cultural values and concepts, as well as animation and film techniques to make something modern and impactful.
While the film tells a story about abuse and painful memories, whispered below the surface is a message of hope. The story and animation both possess a duality that I tackled with much enjoyment. I am happy to present my first film, the result of many long nights surrounded by people whose love and support helped overcome all obstacles.
