Born May 26, 1969 in Moscow in the family of actor Lev Prygunov and Eleanor Umanets. Maternal grandfather, Roman Yemelyanovich Umanets, during the Great Patriotic War was deputy chairman of the USSR State Committee for Supply, then deputy minister of the USSR automobile industry (arrested in 1949, released in 1953, died in 1954).
When Roman was 8 years old, his mother died in a car accident in Riga. Since his father, by virtue of his profession, could not pay enough attention to him, for two years after that Roman lived with his paternal grandmother, and then for three years his father placed him in a Moscow boarding school, where there were many children of cinema and theater workers.
He served in the Soviet Army in the tank forces (military rank - petty officer). In 1992-1996 he worked as a director at the Art Pictures studio, filming music videos and television commercials.
In 1996, together with Philip Yankovsky, he co-founded the advertising agency "Propaganda". Since 1999 he has been a filmmaker, collaborates with the Central Partnership agency, shoots music videos and TV commercials. In 2002, he directed his first feature film, Loneliness of Blood.
Hobbies - snowboarding, about which he shot several documentaries. Visited the Bellingshausen Antarctic Station.
