Unmatta

Aditi is a student of literature, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after being raped as a child and suffers from frequent sleep paralysis. He persuades his 3 friends Nuha, Chaitanya and Vijay to support him in his bizarre initiative. After initial success in his experiment with Nuha, all 4 of them decide to experiment together at a farmhouse. Aditi joins them as a sitter (like a designated driver). Director Statement

I had, a life changing, attack of “sleep paralysis” in 2014. The experience was so powerful that it made me realize the importance of the consciousness in forming the real world. I spend 3 years reading, researching and ultimately could write down a story which can summarize my understanding of the world in most entertaining manner.
“Unmatta” is one of the best science fiction movie India has ever produced. It follows life of Aditi, who was gang raped as a child and suffers from various psychological disorders. She doesn’t remember faces of the rapists. It means that whenever she wants or tries to recollect the faces of culprits, she must experience the rape (in her mind of course). It is not until she tries mind altering drug created by a telepathy researching science student (Siddhartha), that she could finally fight her demons and recollect the faces of culprits. But she finds that rapist is already dead, and her best revenge is to kill him in the dream (i.e forget the incidence and move ahead)! But she utilizes telepathic power which she gained by the drugs to fight other criminals in physical world and thus submits herself to a permanent comma and stays in the dream world forever.
I have made her journey spiritually enlightening and consciousness of each character takes form of a demon. I have made exact same demon that I saw in my own “sleep paralysis” attack. This demon being our own consciousness, knows our deepest desires and thus appears scary at times. No wonder each character fall to his/her desires and gets out of the dream world one way or other.
“Unmatta” is complex piece of puzzle like a zen koan. It has strength to become one of the most viewed science fictions, of its kind, around the world. In the Indian cinema industry which shies away from real science fictions, “Unmatta” is the ray of hope.
