Colleen Bradford Krantz, of Pink Spear Productions, is an independent journalist, author and documentary filmmaker. Her current project is a based-on-actual-events series, Unintended. It is expected to be released sometime in 2019. Previously, Colleen directed and co-produced the 2014 award-winning documentary, West by Orphan Train, which won a regional Emmy. Colleen is creator of the News Tutor app, which teaches critical news viewing. She wrote and co-produced the award-winning television documentary, “Train to Nowhere; Inside an Immigrant Death Investigation,” nominated in 2011 for a regional Emmy award. Her non-fiction book of the same name (Ice Cube Press, 2011) was the starting point for the film. The book was named as a finalist by USA Book News in “Best Books 2011” non-fiction multicultural category. Before becoming an author and filmmaker, Colleen spent a decade as a newspaper reporter, working at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Des Moines Register.
During a phone call to the niece of Myrtle Irish, the young woman who died in 1913, I inadvertently revealed the truth that her death had been tied to an abortion, not appendicitis as the family had long told the niece. It was after this phone call that I decide this production would benefit from the "back stories" and I decided I would “escort” viewers, explaining not only the facts but also the journalistic dilemmas/decisions I faced. We played a game of sorts, where I could only choose other stories of unintended pregnancies that basically landed in my lap and were also somehow connected to one of the previous stories. The way this worked and played out has been amazing. Thanks for your consideration. -- Unintended Director Colleen Bradford Krantz
