Jason Park, a second-generation Korean-American born and raised from the city of Chicago, started making films when he would take his dad’s camera and reenact his favorite movies with his friends that were truly a horrific sight to behold. He somehow decided to study Theology, History, and Secondary Education in college, and spent a year as a teacher/missionary on the island of Palau in the South Pacific, where he eventually reaffirmed his love for cinema.
Soon after, he was selected to the Student Symposium Program at the 40th Telluride Film Festival and received a screenwriting fellowship through Film Independent’s premiere diversity program, Project: Involve.
Park has written, produced, and directed several short films and music videos that have played at several international film festivals including Teachers starring Tatyana Ali and Under the Boardwalk, which is currently on its festival run. Park is also developing his first feature film, Transplant, a film he co-wrote and will direct, which was selected for the 2020 Sundance Screenwriting Intensive.
Park is a 2020 Sundance Feature Film Fellow and a grant recipient from the Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation.
Under the Boardwalk is a film about dialogue - or the lack of truthful dialogue that exists in our conversations. The most pressing issue or question in a relationship is sometimes never broached, and that can result in not seeing what's directly in front of us. Inspired by an actual situation that occurred to David J. Lee, the writer and one of two lead actors, this is a film that explores revelations and discoveries within our family and culture, and how difficult it can be to truly understand what actually might be going on.
