Director Statement

When I was younger, my family would dance in the living room—just the music, the joy, and the togetherness. Those moments shaped how I view movement today. When I started working on Under Your Name, the thought of losing a family member brought me back to that memory, but with a stark contrast. Dee’s dance in the empty house—once filled with music and life, now silent and cold—became a way for me to explore that loss.

Dee’s character was an opportunity to step into emotional shoes that are difficult to fill. Through her, I wanted to confront the hard reality of time—the inevitable loss of what we love as we grow older—and the nomadic burden of nostalgia, the price of freedom. Dee, a nomad by nature, is forced to return to her childhood home, where her life comes to a sudden halt. Her body, grieving, seeks refuge in movement. In Under Your Name, movement isn’t just choreography—it’s an extension of Dee’s internal world, a visceral expression of grief, nostalgia, and heartbreak.

Dee spends much of the film alone, and her expression flows through intimate letters, a eulogy to her mother, and most profoundly, through her dance. We carefully curated her movement to enhance her emotional range without overpowering the film's minimalist and delicate aesthetic. Every gesture was intentional and essential. This challenge pushed me to dive deeper into Dee’s soul, expressing her profound loss through the vehicles of cinema, dance, and spoken word. This journey was not only personal for me but for the entire team as we sought to capture the weight of grief and the complexity of a life in motion.
