Director Statement

This project was born out of a great mystery. Why did a man who had such relevance in the history of the US press ended his days in the interior of Santa Catarina, in the small town of Agrolândia? Thomas John Cardell Martyn's trajectory is shrouded in questions that need to be answered, and this documentary proposes itself to investigate all the intricacies of this story. A family narrative, when a young Agrolandian who is investigating the case, discovers that this illustrious personality who is buried in his small town, is his great-uncle. A journey through the history of his own family that goes from personal to universal, since Thomas John Cardell Martyn is said to be involved with important issues, such as political relations between the United States and Brazil. A counterpoint to the historical perspective is Thomas's personal story, which is shrouded in mysteries and poorly explained facts. An intellectual who abandoned a life built and recognized to go into exile in another country and never returned to his homeland. Why? It is a film that explores curiosity and research. What guides the film are the questions and not the answers, it is the process and not the end. This investigation, told through a road-movie, takes place in different countries and continents, seeking answers about this intriguing man and how he became Uncle Tommy. This documentary has great historical relevance for Brazil, USA and England, having the potential to travel the world, bringing international visibility to documentary cinema produced in Brazil.
