Director Biography - Liu Ze

Liu Ze, born in Yuncheng, Shanxi Province in 1983. Affected by famous direcotr Jia Zhangke During his college life, he make a series of short films. From 2015-2017, shoot his first feature docmentary film Uncle.

Director Statement

The initial reason of shooting this film, ‘Uncle’, is that I heard a story from an elder man who told me about his whole life. He told me about his miserable childhood, the first-time falling in love, a tragic marriage, his ungrateful children, family fleeing, cultural-revolution conflicts, the changing of planned economy, and his career. I paid more attentions on his talking and behaviours, and I eventually interweave his current status of life with oral memories in order to write an age story with his understanding of life and complex experiences.
I have never been so close to observe a person like this time, because his plain life shocked me.
