Director Biography - Alex Astrella

Alex is a documentarian based in Nashville and a native of Laguna Beach who graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Film and Media Studies. While in college Alex wrote and directed the inmate themed films Trial by Fire and Underdogs. These films have screened in dozens of festivals throughout the country including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Arizona International Film Festival, and Sidewalk Film Festival. These films have won the awards Best Short Documentary, Best Student Film, and Best of Fest among others. Alex is now attending Vanderbilt's graduate program in Special Education. He is very passionate about documenting the stories of the unheard and unsung in American society. With Unbreakable, Alex hopes to shed light on the incredible journey of his close friend Serena Young.

Director Statement

Our crew is confident that Serena's life story will create a positive ripple effect in the lives of our viewers. Serena carries a philosophy of hope and imparts the idea that hardship and struggle are not to be avoided but rather provide meaning and form character. This film will inspire audiences and we are excited to showcase the work we have accomplished as a crew.

Our previous documentaries Trial by Fire and Underdogs have an impressive track record of success in the festival circuit. They both played at the prestigious Santa Barbara International Film Festival as well winning "Best Short Documentary" at the Seattle Film Awards and Charlotte Film Festival. Our crew has proven capable of making films that resonate with audiences.
