Director Biography - Christal Westmoreland

I began as a screenwriter for the CHA + DePaul University screenwriting program. My scripts were selected twice as the strongest cohort and performed in front of a live audience. Following three years of completing this program, I spent two years studying film and television at the esteemed Howard University. I recently moved back to Chicago and am now attending DePaul's School of Cinematic Arts. I participated in the DePaul Become A Filmmaker program in 2022 and worked as the second assistant director on the award-winning film "I Am Not Your Token." "Unapologetic," my first short film, was written and directed by me last summer.

Director Statement

I have always had a passion for writing and filmmaking. My personal experiences as a Black woman in America have shaped my ability to write gripping scripts and stories. This includes historical fiction, social justice issues, and controversial topics. I find inspiration in Black filmmakers' work addressing delicate subjects like racism, gun violence, and identity while maintaining their respect in the industry, such as Ava DuVernay, Jordan Peele, and John Singleton. I am working towards earning a degree in screenwriting to be among African Americans in the writing room who strive to reduce racial stereotypes and promote diversity in our field.
