UNTENABLE

In the future, Noah's Ark might not be a ship...

With only three percent of Earth still inhabitable and starvation imminent, an influential politician, Zander, succeeds in passing a planetary agreement "The Ark Law". The law will remove all life forms from inhabitable zones that do not have a functional reproductive womb, which sentences millions of humans and animals to certain death. But when Zander’s motives are questioned because the law includes himself, we discover he has his own plan for the remaining survivors.

Director Statement

This film was designed to provoke questions about a possible future where humanity must combine its Genders in order to survive on a dying planet.

The idea was born during COVID when the general mood was a bit dark, but the film is open to a larger storyline and inevitably a positive ending.

I wanted all of the actors to have a different accent to symbolise other countries who were forced to live together in the remaining habitable space. The actors were relatively fresh, and Katerina, the female talk show host, had just begun acting school.

The locations were chosen for so many reasons, but the main ones were the large industrial windows in the warehouse and the artistic feel of the cafe where we filmed the interview scene. Both locations were also very close to my house and were manageable during covid.

We filmed all of the scenes with Blackmagic Ursa Mini with pretty standard lenses. The main goal was to have the stabiliser and complete the main section of the film in one shot.

The biggest challenge was adding in the hovering digital TV screen, and we eventually found the right VFX team to make it work.

We only had a small crew which worked well, though we still went a little overtime trying to capture the main one-shot clip.

A big thank you to everyone involved and for anyone reading this.
