UMA is a short documentary film that portrays the struggle of Luz Mery Panche and Eliana Montoya Panche. Mother and daughter that are part of the Nasa community and who risk their lives daily to protect the Colombian Amazon.

Director Biography - Berta Vicente Salas, Guillem Trius Soler

Berta Vicente Salas studied humanities and has a Master in Documentary Film from EICTV, the Cinema School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. She focuses on portrait photography and has been working and living in Mexico for many years, she is currently based in Barcelona.
She has received the Sony World Photography Awards in portrait youth category and was selected by Flickr as one of the best 20 under 20 photographers. Berta was also selected by 20Fotógrafos Atitlán and received the GrisArts Scholarship.

Guillem Trius studied journalism and has a Master's Degree in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the London College of Communication. He has worked in countries such as Ethiopia, Uganda, Syria, Niger or Angola, working on the creation of long-term multimedia documentary projects, and publishing reports in international media such as National Geographic, 5W Magazine, Al Jazeera or The Guardian.

Director Statement

For us, it was very important to understand why someone would risk their own life for something that affects all of us.
When we met Luz Mery and Eliana, we realized that to understand why they were fighting to protect the Amazon, we needed to know what it meant to them.
For the Nasa community, the mother earth is perceived as their own mother, and for them, the first relationship that exists is with her.
That is why we wanted to know more about the Nasa cosmology, and learn that the relationship they have with nature is key to understanding their mindset.
