Two Kaamos' - Two Polar Nights

Two Polar Nights is a documentary film about the passion and obsession of collecting.

From Northern Finland, Maarit has been collecting textile artist Elsa Montell's raanus for many decades. These very dear and meaningful wall hangings have not ended up in the parade places of her home, but have slipped into the closet. The collector’s highlights are the curated exhibitions and the self-made event in her own homeyard, the organization of which is both very stressful and rewarding. The film looks for justifications for compulsive collecting and our current relationship with goods.

The documentary film makes visible a person's material relationship with the collected objects. A relationship changes over time and involves a lot of emotions. The film brings out the almost invisible and private with subtle gestures and lets the viewer finally decide what is a valid enough reason for collecting. The colorful wool woven rags on white and cold snow are completely opposites of each other, but so are the contradictions in the mind of the Collector about whether to stop the predation of the goods or to make the collection complete.
