Born in Vila Franca de Xira, 1996. Undergraduate in cinema (areas: screenplay and sound) by Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, has a master’s degree in cinema in Universidade da Beira Interior which he conclued with the film "Echoes of the Red One" (2021). He has done various films in different areas from production, screenplay, direction, photography, sound or editing. His final course film in ESTC (screenplay) “Glaze” (directed by Clara Jost) premiered in Córtex 2019. "Two Cartoonists" was made during his first master's degree year.
With this film, I wish to show the cartoon art made by two big cartoon names in Portugal, António Antunes and Vasco Gargalo. The film ends up working as kind of a passage between two artists. In a way, we can think of a relationship master-apprentice since António is oldest and has more years in this art, although Vasco Gargalo has already received some awards during his career. It connects them current politics critic and the fact that they are both from Vila Franca de Xira, place where occurs annually the exhibition Cartoon Xira that has this year 2019 its 20th edition.
On this documentary I’ve chosen a rather observational look on the work methods of both artists, filming them live at work. I think that it is important the presence of the interview to complement both their artistic identities and to understand their work methods. In conclusion, I shot the Cartoon Xira exhibition to connect the artists but also as a way of taking a certain path that is made from creation to the public viewing their work done.
The documentary was shot in five days divided between an interview with Vasco Gargalo, the opening of CartoonXira, the shooting of Vasco Gargalo at work, the shooting of cartoons made by both presented at CartoonXira and the shooting António Antunes’s work and an interview.
With this film I want to give a voice to a type of art that it is still a bit unknown of the public showing step-by-step a cartoon being made by each of them. Without being on propose, I shot the cartoon “Pax Canina” that meanwhile was censured by New York Times that after that polemic decided to stop publishing cartoons on the international edition. Although not present on the film the question of censorship, personally I believe on freedom of speech and I would like that this film contributed to that.
