Turner's recordings in Bahia

In October 1940, the African-American linguist Lorenzo Turner landed in Salvador to record and study the African languages spoken and sung in the candomblés of Bahia, portraying the linguistic experience of the African diaspora in Bahia, through songs interpreted by personalities such as Mãe Menininha do Gantois, Joãozinho da Goméia, Manoel Falefá, among other priests and priestesses of the time. Using the rare sound recordings made by Turner as a backdrop, the documentary reveals the work of one of the most unknown scholars of the Black Atlantic, weaving a panorama on the presence of African matrices imprinted in these musical memories.

Graduated in Cinema, Gabriela Barreto began her career making films and winning awards when she was still a film student. Her career is marked by approaching popular and Afro-Brazilian culture, with a different vision, privileging points of view that are often neglected, especially of black women. He worked with important names in national cinema such as Andrucha Waddington, Breno Silveira, Kátia Lund, Lula Buarque, Isabel Diegues, among others. With a strong connection with the generation of prominent Bahian filmmakers in the 1980s and 1990s, Gabriela also dedicated herself to the production of cinematographic shows in the interior of Bahia (5 editions of Cine Capão, 1 edition of Cine Guarapuá, 1 edition of Cine Diamantina). and the making of films referring to the Bahian cinematographic movement, such as the film “Bitola Cabeça Super 8”, shown on TV and awarded at 3 national festivals. Director Statement

I have been following with apprehension and revolt the current events of a racial nature within our society, where important discussions are taking place for the future of humanity. It is not just a matter of carrying out a historical reparation for crimes committed against the Afro- descendant population during the long period related to the black diaspora. It is about discussing the importance of black and, mainly, female empowerment. In a historical moment in which the veiled abuses suffered by countless women are revealed, abuses that, due to arguments relating to a supposed “inferiority” of gender and racial were not heard, stories of so many leaders emerge that point to a a fairer and more equitable future.
