Tune Up

Branko Uvodić, legendary host of the cult show "Our Beautiful Land," invites every known and unknown Tamburica band from Croatia and its neighboring countries for a competition, the 52nd Annual Duel of the Tamburas Music Festival.

Attracted by a great and rich prize, 3.5 kilograms heavy sculpture made of 24 carat gold, the young and unknown tamburica band Phantoms of the Plains travel by train from their home village to the great event.

Lost in the mass of tamburica bands Phantoms of the Plains are wrongly accused of stealing the main prize. The Phantoms flee from the general chaos unconsciously carrying with them the gold prize which is hidden in their instrument case planted there by actual thieves, band The Bandits.

During the long and sleepless night, the Phantoms are persecuted across the vast spaces of the Slavonian Plain by the police, as well as by all the tamburica bands who want to get the golden prize. On their way to their native village, The Phantoms have to fight with tamburica groups such as slaughterhouse workers' band The Butchers, agricultural band The Harvesters, the Australian expatriate band The Tambooroos, The Gipsy Wedding Orchestra and the female band The Kulen Sisters.

When they finally reach their home turf on the banks of Danube, they are ambushed by real thieves, the tambura band The Bandits. The Phantoms face the last major showdow.

Director Statement

I wanted to make a film that would be entertaining to me in the hopes that it would be for others as well. In search of what is funny, I imitated as many of my role models as possible.
