Trouble Is My Business

Private Investigator Roland Drake falls for two sisters from the Montemar family. One woman is dead and the other wants to kill him.
Starring Vernon Wells (Mad Max) and Brittney Powell (Xena)

A dark tale of love and betrayal, told in the classic style of film noir. TROUBLE IS MY BUSINESS is a true, hard-boiled noir. Private Detective Roland Drake has fallen on hard times in a harsh world. Drake is being evicted from his office and disgraced by a missing persons case, which has ruined him in the public eye and with police officials. It seems like it's all over for him. Then, redemption walks in... with curves. The owner of those curves is a sexy, dark haired beauty named Katherine Montemar. She wants his help. The chemistry is immediate and her concern for the disappearance of her family members pulls him into her case... and into bed.

Director Statement

There was something special about stepping into the mindset of the story and visual world of film noir as well as the practical production techniques that made these the idea low budget genre films. It's an attitude, a dark, witty, romantic fatalism that drew me to creating the film. The visuals are stylized often with crescendos of light and darkness just as light and dark characters collide. It is a world where the evil characters tell more truths and the plotting and sexuality turn the attractive into the undoing. It explores our darker yearnings that expose our vices and fears. Because I am an actor who knows the technical side of film, my priority is with getting the actor's to feel safe and excited to create their best performances and know they are caught on film. The sensitivity to actor's processes because I know what I like to know and hear when I am performing makes me better able to stage and open up their best work. Story, staging and pace are important. Film is highly collaborative and crews make films happen. Crews and proper backing from a producing team are the only way it can be made well. Michael J Smith is an instrumental producing partner who was always ready to give it all in his time, post production technical know how and financially. Brittney Powell my co-writer helped form it from the beginning and execute an amazing character. I've worked on films for years and finally have given myself permission to make some of my own. I love making films and there is no more pure form of cinema than film noir.
