Jessica Raes (1989) is a stop-motion filmmaker, illustrator and author of more than 15 children’s books. She directed the short film “Lost in Loneliness” that won the price for best short film at the Ostend Film Festival and that was nominated for Film Fest Ghent and Leuven International Short Film Festival.
Recently she finished her celtic short film Triskelion that, after seven years of detailed hand work, was nominated for the Brussels International Fantastic Filmfestival. Jessica obtained her master’s degree in the Audiovisual Arts and in Illustration from the Luca School of Arts in Belgium.
Being bullied in her childhood left deep scars on Jessica. But it was because of that, that she discovered her own inner world and the strength that hides within. Jessica has a quirky view on the world, full of wonder and amazement. She sees colorfulness, beauty and light in everything, even in what’s old, forgotten or misunderstood. She expresses this in the creation of atmosphere and colors in her stories, illustrations and films. Her greatest talent is to bring a fantasy world to life.
Fascinated by legends, myths, culture etymology and antiquity, I landed at the wonderful world of Living History and re-enactment. I immersed myself in the mythological and craft culture of the Celts in the late iron age.
There, at a campfire, I noticed how the Celtic bard Dububrannos, Old Gaelic for Black Raven, entertained his audience with music and stories with a cup of mead. This inspired me to create a movie about the Celtic culture in my ouevre. Sadly we couldn’t meet much. He died unexpectedly at such a historic event and it had such a big impact on me that I had to make a film about dealing with that loss and the anger and vengeance that belong with that feeling.
That film is Triskelion with an adventurous production process of seven years. I did research to Celtic myths and symbols, where I discovered that even the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Anderson got their inspiration from these stories. Together with the re-enactment group, I’ve made historic correct semi-realistic puppets, houses, props and replica’s of grave finds to bring the story and the world of Triskelion to life.
