Colonial Project Trilogy
Sara Carneiro's trilogy of experimental films "Projeto Colonial" propose a critical reflection on European colonialism and its consequences, providing a provocative and metaphysical analysis of historical events and their contemporary resonance.
The artist uses symbolic elements such as burnt car engine oil, earth and fire to create landscapes and abstract scenes that portray sea voyages, the usurpation of territories, the exploitation of natural resources, colonial domination mechanisms and power hierarchies. Whiteness becomes a central theme and intertwines with identity questions, where the artist uses her own image as a vehicle to question the status-quo.
Maintaining an experimental approach, the films establish a dark and tense tone, inviting reflection of the legacy of colonial structures that persist to this day.
