Tricotone 01
TRICOTONE 01 is a stop motion animation created from machine knitted punchcard pattern, with a synth soundtrack mixed by the colours of the yarn. TRICOTONE 01 explores the knitting machine as an electronic instrument - a hybrid mechanical digital interface producing a tactile flow of colours and patterns. By feeding a series of traditional punchcards into the machine, patterns are combined and remixed to produce a final knitted 'film reel'. After steaming, the textile sample is brought to life through careful stopmotion animation. The soundtrack has been generated on a Korg Volca Keys synth, and mixed live using isadora software to analyse colour values in the film. The Film is also available as a series of 3 x 1 minute shorts.

I am an artist and videosmith based in NW England, whose practice combines digital image-making, projection design, community engagement, and machine knitting. I am interested in the overlap and interplay between analogue and digital media, and the possibilities of combining the two in production and performance.
I have developed artistic commissions and projects for organisations including FACT (Liverpool, UK), The Lowry (Manchester, UK) Open Data Institute (UK), Royal Opera House (UK), National Film Board of Canada (CA) Quartier des Spectacles (CA, Mutek (CA), Liverpool Biennial (UK), British FiIm Institute (UK), Staro Riga Festival (Latvia), and numerous libraries, museums and local councils in the UK.
