Tribal Health Initiative - Sittilingi

A unique initiative that began by a doctor couple originally from Kerala, Dr. Regi George, an anesthesiologist, and Dr. Lalitha Regi, a gynecologist was set up in 1993 in the valley of Sittilingi, in rural Tamil Nadu, India. Working in tandem with the tribal community and their pre-existing beliefs and culture, this hospital has grown since then, amongst other programmes that were set up, empowering the locals and especially the women, and giving them the skills and knowledge of catering to patients from the Malevasi (hill-dwellers) community , Lambadi (gypsy) community, as well as other Scheduled Caste Tribes from the surrounding villages. This couple, being highly qualified doctors have chosen to settle in this remote tribal hamlet, making basic healthcare accessible to the poorest of the poor in India.
