Our commitment to watching every film and providing our review notes on Facebook is something frankly EVERY FESTIVAL should do if they're accepting a submission fee. We're starting to add original content, script contests, readings here in NYC, filmmaker spotlights and more.

The 5th Transparent Film Festival will take place live Thursday Night May 18th and Friday Night May 19th at the Theater Under St. Marks in New York City's funky & fun East Village.

Some important things you should know.

We watch every film - PERIOD. Then we a) post screen grabs on Facebook with the Director's name, Country of Origin, Date we watched the film and a blurb about what we saw; and, b) Fill out the ratings card on Film Freeway and send to the filmmaker with a note saying that we're either moving to the next round for judging, passing or putting in the maybe pile.

From that point, our judges (who have either an Emmy, Grammy or Oscar award and/or nominations will decide whether or not a film is selected, and determine the winners.

  • The Transparent Film Festival is always going to have a place in my heart as the very first festival to recognise my work. I loved the fact that they sent a personal review, critique, suggestions and overall score. Networking-wise, I was never going to be able to attend the event in person, but the sheer volume of material on the website and the Fb pages was enough to enable you to comment/share/reach out and generally communicate first hand. Although I only gave the "quality" 4/5, that is not so much of a criticism, but an acknowledgement of the lo-fi, grassroots feel that the festival has. Maybe I've witnessed too many shiny Cannes-type festival shots and the glare has distorted my sight, but Transparent FF was simple yet very effective. I'd be honoured to be accepted again.

My team and I are extremely honoured and pleasantly surprised to learn only recently that our "Sonate Tableaux: Mouvement 1" received the Best Music Performance (Concert) Video Award. We would like to thank the Transparent Film Festival and the judges for recognizing our work, for providing us with comments on our classical music video, for giving us the opportunity to be part of the 4th edition of this international festival, and for sharing our film with the public.

We were able to travel to New York to attend the recent Awards Screening event, and we did confirm our presence at the event by email. However, we were disappointed that not even a clip from our award-winning classical music video was presented on the silver screen and that our award was neither announced nor presented at this very event.

In light of the number of serious hiccups at this year's festival, we would like to offer a few suggestions for improvement as we believe that the Transparent Film Festival can be a valuable festival for filmmakers around the world: clearer communication, better organization, more networking opportunities, more in-person screenings (the experience of viewing a film on the big screen is not the same as that of viewing it online on a computer or laptop), and a more inclusive and organized presentation of the film categories, their respective nominated films, and their respective awards and prizes at the festival's culminating Awards Screening event.

On a positive note, the festival director Brian Lane and his team do show genuine support and respect for filmmakers and their work as well as their passion and appreciation for the art of filmmaking. It has been a rather unusual experience, and we hope that the Transparent Film Festival will continue to improve and grow to provide participating filmmakers with a truly enlightening and enriching experience.
