It's been a year since Michael, Wayne's husband, passed. When they made the arrangements regarding Michael's ashes, Michael has requested that part of his ashes be scattered in the ocean. Wayne decides to honor that wish on the first anniversary of his passing. He packs Michael's ashes, a paper boat, flowers, Michael's photo, a candle, some wine and some of Michael's belongings and heads out to the beach. When he gets to the beach, Wayne sets up a make-shift shrine at the beach, sets his alarm to 11:32 am (the time of Michael's passing), and puts on his headphones (playing The Willow Tree, by Exene Cervenka, who, along with X, is Michael's favorite artist; this is also the song that Michael requested to be played at his funeral.)
When the alarm goes off at 11:32, Wayne picks up the paper boat that contains the ashes, puts the flowers in the boat, walks to the ocean and releases the boat. Instead of being washed out to sea, the boat gets washed back to Wayne's feet. Wayne releases it again, but it comes back again. Wayne does it a third time, it still comes back. The crowd starts to gather and out of desperation and not wanting to draw attention, Wayne picks up the boat and dumps its content in the waves. Just then, a woman comes up to her asking what Wayne was doing. He explains that he's there to scatter his late husband's ashes on his passing anniversary. The woman starts crying, bawling, actually, as she was moved by what she heard, and Wayne starts to comfort her. He takes her back to the make-shift shrine and offered her some wine to calm her down. She finally calms down, finishes all the wine, leaves Wayne her number just in case he wants to go dancing later, since it is New Year's Eve after all, and walks away, leaving Wayne feeling bewildered and wondering what has just happened.
