Transforming Lives: A Dream of Vision Care
Bangladesh is a significant producer of tea. There are 167 commercial tea estates, some of which are the biggest active tea plantations in the world. More than 4 million employees and 300,000 gardeners produces 3% of the world's tea. 75% of them are women.
Generations of tea workers have lived on tea estates. Their access to healthcare is very limited. For picking more than 20 kg of tea per day, they receive less than $2. Their lengthy, strenuous jobs cause a variety of eye problems.
To address the eye issues of tea workers, Orbis International, an organization that strives to eliminate blindness globally, has stepped forward. In collaboration with Sylhet Modern Hospital, 4000 tea workers and their family members from Sylhet's Tea Estate Malnicharcha, underwent a primary eye care through house-to-house screening.
210 spectacles and 123 Medicine and 80 cataract surgeries have been given away completely free as part of this voluntary project.
This main focus of this documentary is to raise awareness on Inclusive eye care to ensure equitable vision care for the 4 million workers involved in tea production.
