Trail Of Tears

Logline
A close-knit group of friends is thrown into chaos when one of them is asked to testify at a police lineup, forcing them to grapple with the harsh realities of a sinister secret, which tests the limits of their friendship and pushes them to the brink of their own moral and emotional boundaries.

Synopsis
In a dusty Western town, a close-knit group of friends—Neakita, Audley, Maruja, and three ex-military men, Ned, Dutch, and Sebastian—find solace in the local saloon. Unbeknownst to them, Neakita harbors a dark secret from her past involving Pascal, a man on the nation's most-wanted list who once kidnapped and tortured her. When Neakita is forced to confront Pascal at the police station, his escape and her subsequent re-abduction shatter the group’s peace. The friends rally to save Neakita, but the ordeal results in Dutch’s death and a maimed Ned. Although Pascal is eventually killed, the true battle is against the lingering trauma he left behind, which begins to tear the group apart. Maruja attempts to help Neakita heal, but the trauma proves too great. In the end, Neakita takes her own life, and Winston, a saloon regular, reveals the horrific truth behind her suffering, forever altering the town’s once-innocent fabric.

#######

"For The Freedom," "Between Life and Death," and "Trail of Tears" form a contemporary Western trilogy, each centered on a strong female protagonist. While the stories feature distinct characters and narratives, they are unified by their shared setting in the same evocative town.

In each installment, a compelling MacGuffin emerges in the third act, revealing a poignant and sorrowful secret. These screenplays trade the mystery of "whodunits" for the deeper, emotional question of "WHOAREYOUs," unraveling raw, heart-wrenching truths about identity, resilience, and the human spirit.

Writer Biography - Hans Sluijter

Originally from the Netherlands, I began my creative journey as a teacher and sociologist, where I developed a deep understanding of human behavior and the power of storytelling to influence, inspire, and unite. That foundation led me to the world of screenwriting, where I now bring layered, globally resonant narratives to life.

My passion for meaningful stories has driven me to create works that reflect both personal truth and societal depth. Collaborating with industry legend Kevin Pike marked a turning point in my career — one that affirmed my belief in bold, cross-cultural storytelling.

As I continue this journey, I remain committed to creating cinema that connects and endures. The stories are ready — now I’m seeking the right partnerships to bring them to the screen.
