Towards Conservation 4.0
Covering an area of 830,268 hectares, Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the largest national parks in Southeast Asia. From the coastal ecosystems to the Bukit Barisan mountains, the park represents part of the UNESCO designated ‘Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra’. With its outstanding universal value, this national park area has become strategic in both regional and global contexts. Gunung Leuser Natinal Park Management Unit aimed to implement a knowledge-based management for of the area, based on accurate information from the field. The Management Unit initiate a project to consolidate the scattered data in a data management unit called UDIK: the Conservation Data and Information Unit. UDIK allows them to make plans that are more accurate and based upon clear information.
They can also set priorities for their activities, both in the short- and long-term. UDIK makes decision-making and policy creation much more convenient for them.
