Lucy L (Luciele Lima) is an emerging name among young Brazilian screenwriters and directors. With six feature-length scripts under her belt, she has collaborated with renowned production companies like Prodigo Films, Paris Entretenimento, and Inspira Filmes. Her short films, "Ocean Eyes" (selected for DIFF 2021), "What Would You Say to Her" (highlighted at the 3rd Lugar de Mulher É No Cinema Showcase, 2019), "Marian" (screened at BIFE 2018), and "Undateable" (featured in The Lift-Off Sessions 2018), have gained recognition at international festivals. Moreover, in 2019, her project reached the semifinals of the prestigious "ScreenCraft Fellowship," a highly competitive international screenwriting grant. As a director, some of her recent projects include the shorts "The Boat," "Filhos da Mãe," and "Tokens." In the educational realm, Lucy taught a film scriptwriting course at SESC Itumbiara in 2019 and, more recently, in 2023, she led a Film Workshop during the holidays at Uptime English School.
Creating "Tokens" was, in essence, an exploration of language - not just in the spoken form, but in the intricate dance of visual storytelling. Directing this short film at an English school in Brazil presented its unique set of challenges and joys. The students, in their raw enthusiasm and earnest attempts at mastering film and the English language, brought a fresh and untainted perspective to the script. Beyond that, their youth was a delightful advantage. The world, as seen through their eyes, was filled with wonder, curiosity, and boundless possibilities. They questioned, probed, and sometimes challenged the very tenets I had taken for granted. This became a process of mutual learning. I was teaching them about filmmaking, but they were teaching me about boundless imagination and unfettered creativity.
Thank you to each and everyone who embarked on this journey with me. You have not just made a film; you have crafted a memory that will be cherished forever.
