Kaci Hamilton is a Jamaican actor, writer, and voiceover artist, and a graduate of the William Esper Studio. "Toast" is her first solo video project as a director. Previously she assistant directed the off-off-Broadway experimental theatre production "The List" at The Player's Theatre and The Box in New York City. As an actress, she made her stage debut as Tituba in "The Crucible" with Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska, and as Katherine/Boy with Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre’s production of "Henry V". Some of her favourite credits include the shorts "Dying Cowboy", "The Life and Death Of...", "Getaway", which premiered this year at Essence Fest, the Toronto Black Film Festival, and The Pan-African Film Festival. But before all of that, she had a whole life as an editor and writer. She holds a master's degree in Poetry from Hunter College, is published in the Alfred A. Knopf anthology "Killer Verse: Poems of Murder and Mayhem", and had stints at Picador, "Interview", "Islands", and "Caribbean Travel + Life", among other publishing entities. Most recently, she launched her own podcast, "Jamaican Me Sleepy", narrating classic bedtime stories and fairy tales. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her fiancé.
I have always been fascinated by artificial intelligence. However I am even more curious about the question of who designs AI and tech, versus who uses it. "Toast" is in dialogue about the origins of AI, as well as its potential. It is a metaphor about unchecked progress and what happens when the person controlling the narrative knows nothing about the recipient of the story. It is lastly a meditation on loneliness, isolation and the silence surrounding mental health in the BIPOC community, especially women of colour.
