To the Contrary is announcing the 2019 About Women and Girls film festival highlighting the rights and struggles of women, girls and diverse communities where winners will have their programming broadcast nationally on PBS.

For more than a quarter of a century, PBS’s To the Contrary has been dedicated to highlighting the diverse perspectives of women on issues impacting women, children and diverse communities. After a successful first film festival for our 25th anniversary, TTC is once again offering aspiring documentarians, women and men, the chance to get their exceptional programs seen on our PBS program. To the Contrary airs on 91% of PBS stations nationwide, on Canadian television and Voice of America internationally.

We are requesting that all of the entries be available for judging online. All documentaries should have been completed in 2018 and NOT ever aired on broadcast or cable television. We encourage first time aspiring documentarians to submit their work to this festival. There is no fee for entering this festival. PLEASE READ THE RULES AND GUIDELINES CAREFULLY TO BE SURE OF ELIGIBILITY.

In 2018 the film festival highlighted the work of young documentarians as part of the TTC series.

The winners were:
1) Winner for Changing Attitudes About Gender: Love Win. Filmmaker Robin Kampf brought us a compelling and enchanting love story about two elderly ladies, Jan and Emily, who met and fell in love during a time when doing so was strictly taboo. .
2) Winner for Women's Issues- U.S.: NO CHOICE. One in four women has had an abortion yet no one talks about it. Director Pamela Mason Wagner and Public Square Media tells us stories they hope will break the silence and the stigma. What America might be like if Roe v. Wade were not the law of the land: if there were NO CHOICE.
3) Winner for Women's History, U.S.: Hello Girls. Filmmaker Jim Theres tells the story of America's first female soldiers. In 1918 the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France as telephone operators to help win the Great War. But you've probably never heard of them. Now you will!
4) Winner for Student Entry: Love Mommy. Two years after being released from prison, Kilzy Gonzalez is fighting to regain custody of one of her daughters. Tala Hadavi and Yeong-Ung Yang brought us an intimate portrait of a mother trying to overcome personal demons and prove she deserves a second chance.

There will be one winner in each of the five categories. The winning documentaries will be aired on PBS' To the Contrary.

The documentarian will be responsible for all costs associated with editing the entry to approximately 25 minutes in length and delivering the media on a hard drive in digital format HD 1080i format that conforms to PBS broadcast standards and delivery guidelines as the Festival imposes. Funding for the program must comply with federal regulations and PBS policy outlined in the full rules and must be in English.
