To All The Books

Filmmaker/author/musician Josh Malerman has done it all. He’s a New York Times best-selling author. His books have been adapted into major films, including Bird Box, the most-watched movie on Netflix starring Sandra Bullock. He wrote the theme song to the Emmy Award winning eleven season series Shameless. He spent six years on tour traveling the world, and to this day lives a carnival-esque life filled with artistic endeavors in Michigan. And yet with every new novel and creative venture, Josh must face the terror of the blank page and accept the rollercoaster ride of living the life of an artist. Now the audience can ride alongside Josh as he traverses the ups and downs of writing his next book.

Packed with raw honesty and soaring inspiration, TO ALL THE BOOKS is a fly-on-the-wall documentary presenting the creative process of one of the most accomplished horror novelists of our time.

Director Statement

A couple years back I’d just finished a novel and gleefully posted as much online.
This was followed by an immediate internal chasm. The post totally wasn’t enough. I
started wishing for a wider medium to reveal the roller coaster ride of wrapping a book. I
needed a bigger canvas, to say: I’m done, yes, but it was total madness in the doing.
Joy, horror, courage, doubt, worry, mania, pride, relief.
Then I thought: A movie could do the trick.
Yes. This sounded good. This sounded right.
A documentary on the writing of a novel! No more two sentence declarations ill-
equipped to carry the weight of the moment. A movie. And, whether it means spoiling
the end of the book or not, the audience will need to know everything I know, as I know
it, from idea to outline to The End.
This movie isn’t about writing… it’s about writing a specific book. And, if I pulled it
off, viewers will feel the enthusiasm, the strain, the funny stuff, the dark stuff, the
whirlwind, the ecstasy… so that maybe, just maybe, they feel inspired upon finishing,
galvanized to go write a book, make a movie, of their own.
That’s the big aim.
And cheers to them if they do it. And cheers to all who might try.
And cheers, of course…
To All the Books.
