Director Biography - Grace Sullivan, Rosie Pingxin Zhou

Grace Sullivan moved to Philadelphia to study film at Temple University, diving straight into her directorial debut short Roadkill sophomore year. Grace thinks the most powerful stories start from something real and centers her work on female protagonists. She makes purposeful decisions in her directorial projects to seek other women from diverse backgrounds in head roles. She wrapped up her second narrative short, Time To Tango, earlier this year during her semester abroad in Prague and is currently directing a documentary concerning environmental issues in Philadelphia. Grace’s passion lies with the written word, her Southern hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, her ever-supportive friends and family, and oat milk in her coffee. Always.

Rosie Pingxin Zhou is a senior studying Film and History at Columbia University. Since she decided to pursue filmmaking during her sophomore year of college, she has written and directed her short films and worked on numerous sets in various roles. Through her films, she seeks to center the stories of workers, women, immigrants, and others within marginalized societal positions. She is currently developing a short film, "365 夜 (365 Nights)” and writing her first feature-length script. While studying at FAMU in Prague for a semester, she rediscovered her love for acting and has acted in numerous short films since then. When not watching or working on films, she enjoys being involved in student theater, taking long walks in the park, and playing badminton.

Director Statement

This story was many things before it became what it is now, but it was always about control and it was always about the passage of time.

Dance is something we’ve always been mesmerized by—people do it knowing it’s a fleeting ability yet they do it with such passion. It’s beautiful visually and emotionally. Eva lacks passion when we meet her; she’s a character driven by ambition because she’s been taught she must be to succeed. This universe and this teacher give her a chance to find that somewhere she wasn’t expecting to.

Both of us feel like a seed was planted in our brains young that success equals fulfillment and ambition is a necessity. As we entered college and reached the “ultimate goal” we set for ourselves in our youth, we realized we’re already exhausted. Community and art bring us the most joy, and letting go of the conventional idea of “success” relieves so much of the anxiety that followed us through our youth. We wanted to create a story where an older woman realizes the same thing. We hope you enjoy Time To Tango!
