Giselle realised she wanted to write (and tell) stories about women, for women after watching Song of the Exile by Ann Hui for the first time at 16. She wanted nothing more than to make films about female protagonists; depicting women’s passions, disappointments, and routines.
Giselle feels strongly for the female gaze in cinema and is heavily inspired by human interaction, the transience of life, and the impermanence of, and emotional quality present in, all things, living or not.
She has been a 35mm analogue photography hobbyist for the last decade and tries to capture the in-between moments of everyday Singaporean life whenever she can, strangers and loved ones alike. She also experiments with making mini home movies with her Super 8 camera, and appreciates the imperfect and candid nature of the silent medium.
Giselle believes that art is the ordinary and the ordinary is art, and constantly looks to the women in her life and their experiences for inspiration. She hopes to make films that will incite feelings over intellect and strives for her art to make people feel “⼼酸”, an untranslatable description for a feeling of heartache and bittersweet melancholy.
