Director Statement

Very few things compare to the feeling of a deteriorating confidence. When I conceived the idea for “Through Your Lens,” a thought-provoking, and character-driven story, I had this knawing feeling pecking away at both me and my self-esteem. I was coming off a second brand shoot and I had begun realizing a pattern in the type of women my photographers were choosing to showcase. Despite being what society might deem as a lighter skinned Black woman with half the struggle, intersectionality and misogynoir is a very real experience that cuts deeply across the board.

Additionally, as a woman who prides herself on being a voice for her sisters, I created this story to capture a snippet of the hidden and internalized pain those around me have only vocalized to each other. “Through Your Lens” is a film meant for all of us to turn a mirror on ourselves and evaluate the footprint that we are leaving both digitally and psychologically. And it is a story meant to help dismantle the long-standing prejudices women like me have had to face— be it because of hair, skin, or body type. I want the women watching this film to know that: I see you.
