Director Statement

One day, my husband (who's Balinese) returned from visiting his aunt (Luh Sukarmi) and showed me a video of all the spiders around her house knowing that I really fear them.

Frightened, I started to question him: how can your aunt live with them? Why doesn’t she get rid of them? Is she scared? Did she think about moving out?

While he started to explain to me a bit more about her beliefs, I quickly understood that she had a complete other point of view on this situation. It really opened my eyes to how sometimes a situation arises in our lives and it’s up to us to decide what we are going to do about it. This story is also about perspective: instead of fighting something that is hard to control, we can decide to let it go and live in harmony with it. I also wanted to know more about how religion and our beliefs can help to overcome some situations.

It was important to me to tell her story because I think that it’s such a unique way of seeing the world and it gives the audience a whole new angle on things.

Maybe what we fear is just about the perspective that we have on it ?
